Like a modern day Canute the Conservative led Coalition government was caught dragging its heels with the respect to the large areas of the south of England suffer under unprecedented levels of rainfall onto already saturated land that had not had chance to drain since the previous deluge. The resuly was that communities were cut off in the southwest and as the effects moved east into the Home Counties, Conservative ministers suddenly began to take the matter seriously and Prime Minister David Cameron stated that those whose properties were caught in the stormwater would receive immediate help and he would pressure insurers into acting swiftly to compensate. This left many on the northeast still waiting to be paid out from the previous years floods accusing the PM of treating his voter base as a special case for special treatment.
