The Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer claimed to have halved the £1.5 billion European Union bill when in reality they had no achieved any reduction at all and merely counted the rebate the UK was to receive anyway. So having managed to wangle a defeat into an apparent victory with very little comeback in the media it left many to questioning motives and vested interest.
